Drywall Screws Coarse Thread
Drywall coarse thread screws secure plasterboard to timber studs, battens, and joists. Their deep, widely spaced threads grip timber to safely fasten ceiling and wall boards.
What Is Coarse Drywall Screws?
Coarse drywall screws are steel screws designed for fixing plasterboard to timber frames. The wide threads bite into the wood and pull the board tight.
Most are coated with a black phosphate finish that makes them easier to drive in smoothly. However, black-phosphate coated drywall screws are only used for internal dry applications only.
Their bugle head is designed to sink slightly below the plasterboard surface without tearing the paper face.
What Are Coarse Thread Drywall Screws Used For?
They are used to fix plasterboard securely to timber systems. They hold well because wood fibres provide a solid surface for the threads to grip.
Common lengths, selected spending on board thickness and frame depth include:
- 35mm coarse drywall screws
- 42mm coarse drywall screws
- 50mm coarse drywall screws
- 65mm coarse drywall screws
- 75mm coarse drywall screws
- 100mm coarse drywall screws
They are not ideal for metal stud framing. The wide threads fail to bite properly into thin steel and may damage the frame instead of holding the board in place.
They are also not suitable for:
- High-moisture areas (unless corrosion-resistant versions are used)
- Exterior use
- Fire-rated assemblies, unless the fixing specification explicitly permits them

What is coarse thread drywall screws used for?
They are used to fix drylining boards to wood. The threads pull into timber easily, hold firmly, and reduce the risk of screw loosening over time ā they resist vibration and timber movement better than fine threads. You can also use them to fasten boards to plywood or OSB because of their firm grip.
How many coarse thread drywall screws per plasterboard?
Space screws about 300 mm apart around the edges and 300ā400 mm apart across the middle in line with standard UK drylining practice.
This usually equates to 30 to 50 screws per standardUK plasterboard sheet. The number could vary slightly, depending on stud spacing and board size.
