130mm Insulation
130mm insulation is a substantial insulation depth, specified when heat loss needs to be controlled, not merely improved. This thickness sits in the range where insulation plays a primary role in meeting energy performance targets.
What is 130mm insulation thickness?
130mm thick insulation means the material measures 130 millimetres when installed at its nominal thickness, without compression. That depth increases the resistance to heat transfer through the building element.
At an insulation thickness 130mm, performance comes from two things working together:
- Air pockets within the insulation reduce conductive and convective heat transfer.
- The material’s inherent thermal resistance further limits heat flow.
What is 130mm thick insulation used for?
130mm insulation thickness is typically used where sufficient depth is available with the construction, such as:
- External walls with deep studs
- Roofs designed for high thermal targets
- Floors where heat loss to unheated spaces needs to be minimised
It is commonly specified in projects aiming to meet or exceed Part L requirements, when combined with an appropriate overall build-up.
What insulation is available in 130mm?
Several insulation types are made or built up to insulation 130mm thickness:
- Mineral wool Insulation (slabs or batts) – good for sound and fire resistance
- Glass wool insulation – lighter, flexible, easy to friction-fit
- Rigid PIR boards – higher thermal performance per millimetre
- Phenolic insulation boards – very high thermal resistance in a limited space
Some systems, especially those using PIR and phenolic boards, combine two thinner layers to achieve thick insulation 130mm while reducing gaps.
Benefits of thick 130mm insulation
Thick 130mm insulation offers:
- Lower heat loss, especially in winter
- More stable indoor temperatures
- Better long-term energy savings
- Improved comfort near walls and floors
At this depth, insulation becomes a core part of the building’s thermal envelope.
FAQ
Where to buy 130mm insulation?
You can buy 130mm insulation online from Insulation Wholesale. We stock, supply, and offer a wide range of insulation types and brands. Our team understands build-ups and can help match insulation to site conditions. We keep pricing competitive, offer fast delivery, and make ordering straightforward, whether you are buying one pack or kitting out a full job.
Where to fit 130mm insulation?
130mm insulation is most effective in:
- Stud walls deep enough to avoid compression
- Warm roof constructions
- Suspended floors that need strong thermal control
It should sit flush, with no bowing or gaps, and must match the depth of the surrounding structure.
How to fix 130mm insulation?
Fixing depends on the material:
- Mineral or glass wool: friction-fit between studs or joists.
- Rigid boards: mechanically fixed or bonded, joints tightly butted.
- Multi-layer systems: stagger the joints to reduce heat paths.
Keep the insulation dry and properly supported. Correct installation and continuity are as important as insulation thickness itself.
