How effective is acoustic insulation?

Overall, sound insulation is highly effective. But factors such as the material, thickness, type of walls, floors, or ceilings, and installation technique may affect its efficacy. It is exceptionally good at reducing common household noise, such as TV sound and background activities.

Is acoustic insulation as good as thermal insulation?

Each serves a unique purpose. Acoustic insulation primarily reduces the transmission of sound between rooms or spaces, effectively soundproofing walls. This means you should use dense, fibrous materials – mineral wool, acoustic boards, or foam – to trap and absorb sound waves. The role of thermal insulation is to slow heat loss or gain, keeping rooms warm in winter and cool in summer. This requires you to use PIR boards, EPS/XPS foam, and mineral wool, all of which have excellent heat control properties. Some materials, such as mineral wool slabs, provide both acoustic and thermal benefits. For projects where thermal performance is the priority, thermal insulation products are more suitable. If the goal is creating quiet rooms, acoustic insulation will be far more effective.

How much is acoustic insulation?

Sound proof insulation boards or sheets generally cost £10–£25 per sheet for common plasterboard or acoustic panel types. Prices vary depending on fire rating and density. More specialised acoustic foam or barrier-style sheets attract higher prices – around £120 for a 2 m × 1.2 m foam sheet.
