PIR Insulated Plasterboard
PIR insulated plasterboard combines two functions in one board: a finished internal lining and built-in thermal insulation.
Using this type of board reduces the number of layers required, and therefore, it improves thermal comfort without major structural changes.
What is PIR plasterboard?
PIR plasterboard is a drywall panel with insulation bonded to the back. The front section is made up of standard gypsum plasterboard, while the rear is rigid PIR (polyisocyanurate) insulation. The PIR insulation is typically faced with foil to limit water vapour transmission and improve thermal performance, depending on the system design.
The board achieves thermal performance through the closed-cell structure, which traps gas and slows heat transfer.
Because PIR insulates well for its thickness, the board is comparatively thin compared to other insulated linings.
It is also called PIR backed plasterboard or simply insulated plasterboard.
What is plasterboard with insulation used for?
This type of board is mainly used to upgrade thermal performance within a building.
Common uses include:
- Lining cold external walls from the room side
- Improving insulation in solid-wall homes
- Upgrading older properties without modifying the outside
It can be used on new builds, older homes, solid-wall properties, timber and metal stud partitions, extensions, and loft conversions. It is also ideal for refurbishment projects where improving warmth from the inside is the only realistic option.
Since the insulation is factory-bonded, fixing is quicker than fitting insulation and plasterboard separately.

How to install PIR plasterboard?
Installation depends on the wall behind the panel.
For solid walls, boards are usually fixed using adhesive dabs combined with mechanical fixings. For timber or metal studs, boards are screw-fixed through the plasterboard and PIR into the framing.
Joints are taped or skimmed as normal, but care is taken to keep insulation joints tight. Gaps reduce performance, so accuracy matters.
The foil layer can also act as a vapour control layer. On solid walls in particular, it is important that boards are fitted tightly and penetrations sealed. Fixings should follow manufacturer guidance to help limit moisture movement into the wall.
