9.5mm Plasterboard

The 9.5mm plasterboard is one of the slimmer plasterboard types available. It is a gypsum plasterboard with strong paper facings, manufactured to a flat, uniform finish and ready for installation on ceilings and walls.

What is 9.5mm plasterboard sheet?

9.5mm plasterboard is a flat board made of gypsum (a soft mineral) sandwiched between paper facings. It is 9.5 mm thick – thinner than the most common 12.5 mm board. Because it is lighter, it’s easier to handle, cut, and fix.

These boards are available in either straight edges (9.5 mm plasterboard square edge) or slight bevels on the long sides (9.5 mm tapered edge plasterboard). Both edge types help with how joints are finished later.

The most common 9.5mm size is 1200 × 2400mm, though smaller formats – like 900 x 1800mm – for handling and patch repairs are also available.

What are 9.5mm plasterboards used for?

This is a light-duty interior lining board used in:

  • Fixing internally to timber or metal studs.
  • Lining internal walls (9.5 mm plasterboard on walls) to prepare them for plastering or decoration.
  • Lining ceilings, especially in minor or non-structural work (9.5 mm plasterboard ceiling). Only used where joist centres are close and loads are minimal.

It is not intended for heavy-impact zones or high-performance applications on its own.

Types of 9.5mm plaster boards

Here are the main 9.5mm boards:

Standard board – the basic version suitable for most drylining work. It is an everyday board. It has a gypsum core with paper faces and no added performance features. Best for dry internal spaces; works well when the wall or ceiling does not require extra fire, moisture, or sound control.

Square edge – this board features straight edges all around (9.5 mm plasterboard square edge), best for butt-joint taping. Square edge boards have straight, flat sides. When two boards meet, they form a tight joint with no recess. This makes them suitable when you plan to skim plaster over the entire surface or tape joints carefully without needing a built-in groove.

Tapered edge – this has sides with a slight V-shape (9.5 mm tapered edge plasterboard), making joint finishing smoother. Tapered edge boards have slightly thinned long edges. That shallow dip creates space for joint tape and compound, helping joints sit flatter once finished. This makes them a good choice for taped and jointed systems where you want a smooth finish without full plastering.

Small-format boards – these are designed for easy fitting in tight spots. Often used for patching, boxing-in, and small refurb work where full boards would not fit well.

Moisture-resistant, fire-rated, and acoustic plasterboards are usually supplied in thicker formats, as higher performance systems typically rely on thicker boards or multi-layer builds.

Benefits of 9.5mm plaster board sheets

Installing a sheet of 9.5mm plasterboard delivers benefits like:

  • Easy to lift – lighter than thicker boards and easier to handle on site.
  • Faster to fix – screws go in quickly, and the weight is not overwhelming.
  • Good for repairs – smaller jobs suit 9.5mm well.
  • Slim profile – helps keep slim stud wall buildups without compromising on the available space.
  • Smooth finish – provides a smooth base for plastering or jointing before painting.
