Moisture Resistant Plasterboard

High humidity spaces like bathrooms and some kitchen zones need more protection than regular plasterboard can provide. They require moisture resistant plasterboard – often called MR board or green plasterboard.

These panels are not waterproof, but they perform much better in damp or steamy conditions than regular plasterboards.

What is moisture resistant plasterboard?

Moisture resistant plasterboard is also widely known as Green Plasterboard, MR Plasterboard, Moisture Plasterboard or sometimes people call it Waterproof plasterboard. It is a special type of board made with water-repellent additives that slow down moisture absorption.

Although it is often mistakenly described as waterproof plasterboard, this panel is not waterproof. It performs well against humidity and splashes, but it is not meant for constant water exposure, such as inside showers, unless first protected with a tanking system.

What is moisture resistant plasterboard used for?

Moisture plasterboard is fitted anywhere humidity can weaken standard plasterboard.

Its common uses include:

  • Bathrooms and kitchen areas (e.g, above sinks or cookers).
  • Commercial kitchens.
  • Utility rooms and laundry areas.
  • Shower spaces (only when used with tanking or suitable tile backing).
  • Basements and lower-level floors with limited ventilation.
  • Changing rooms and wash zones.

Types of moisture plasterboard

You can select from several types, including:

  • 12.5mm MR Board – A balanced option for general domestic use.
  • 15mm MR Board – Good for commercial or multi-layer wall systems that need extra strength.
  • Moisture Resistant Plasterboard Square Edge Board – Best for ceilings and areas that do not require skimming. Its straightforward design is easy to fit and gives a clean finish.
  • Moisture Resistant Tapered Edge Board – Perfect for taping and jointing. They give an even, flush finish.

All options meet UK building regulations and moisture performance, with available brands including Siniat, GYPFOR, Knauf, and British Gypsum.
