Metal U Track
Metal U track is a U-shaped steel channel installed at the head and base of a stud partition. Vertical metal studs slot into it so you can build straight, stable, non-load-bearing partitions without timber. The track serves as the floor and ceiling channel that locates and restrains the metal studs.
What is galvanised U Track?
Galvanised U track is formed like the letter “U” and has a zinc coating (galvanising) that protects it from rust. Most metal U track supplied in the UK are galvanised as standard. The zinc layer protects the steel from corrosion, so the track lasts well over time and performs reliably as part of tested U track metal stud partition systems.
What is metal U channel used for?
Builders use the metal U channel track to:
- Make non-load-bearing walls (partitions)
- Locate and restrain plasterboard-lined stud partitions
- Form soffits or simple ceiling frames
The studs that fit into the channel create the wall’s skeleton; plasterboard then covers both sides. This system is quick to install, lighter than timber framing, and allows for accurate, straight wall construction.

Where is U track used?
U track is used at the floor and ceiling line of stud partitions, around door openings, and at junctions where walls meet ceilings. It offers the main fixing point for the metal stud frame.
How long is U track?
Standard lengths are usually 3000mm (3 metres). That is the standard stock length so that installers can measure and cut on site. Longer wall runs are formed by joining multiple track lengths with overlaps or splice plates.
How to fix metal U track?
- Mark the run.
- Fix the U track securely to the floor and ceiling. Use the correct fixings, such as masonry anchors for concrete floors and timber screws for timber headers.
- Screw the vertical C-studs into the track or snap them in, keeping them vertical. Note that in many systems, the studs are left free in the top track to allow for ceiling deflection.
- Next, fix the plasterboard to the stud frame, tape and joint the boards.
Check the manufacturer’s datasheet for spacing and screw types. Studs are typically set out at 400mm or 600mm centres, depending on board type and system specifications.
