Fireproof Insulation Thermal
Fireproof insulation provides essential protection against heat and flame spread in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, helping meet UK fire safety regulations.
As a fire-rated material, it helps protect structural integrity while giving occupants vital extra time if a fire occurs.
What is fireproof insulation?
Fireproof insulation, also known as fire retardant insulation or fire resistant insulation, is built to tolerate high temperatures and limit the rate at which flames spread. It is typically manufactured using non-combustible raw materials such as mineral wool, fibreglass, or specially formulated foams.
Each product is rigorously tested to meet UK and European fire standards. Most achieve a Class A1 or A2 fire rating, meaning they will not ignite, drip, or emit toxic smoke. Thicknesses often range from 25mm to 100mm, with R-values up to 3.0 m²K/W for acoustic and fire resistance.
Applications of fireproof insulation
Fire-resistant insulating material is effective where safety, heat control, and structural protection are essential. It is frequently specified for:
- Internal and external wall systems.
- Ceilings, floors, and roof spaces.
- Around service ducts, pipes, and electrical conduits.
- Fire-rated doors, partitions, and shafts.
- Boiler rooms, plant rooms, and commercial kitchens.
- Steel frames and structural columns.
In modern UK construction, fireproof insulation is often paired with rated boards or fireproof expanding foam to create complete fire-safe systems.
Types of fireproof insulation
We stock a full range of fire rated insulation materials to suit every project:
- Rockwool Fireproof Insulation: Mineral wool slabs and rolls that offer A1 non-combustible protection and impressive acoustic performance.
- Fireproof Insulation Boards: Rigid boards designed for wall linings and fire barriers. Available in various thicknesses.
- Fire Resistant Insulation Boards: For added durability in high-risk spaces such as plant rooms and risers.
Benefits of Fireproof Insulation
Built for performance and compliance, fireproof insulation offers lasting safety and comfort. Here’s why it is a preferred choice among UK builders:
- Meets or exceeds BS EN 13501-1 fire safety standards.
- Slows flame spread and limits heat transmission.
- Maintains structural integrity under high temperatures.
- Reduces smoke and toxic fume release.
- Enhances both fireproof and thermal insulation performance.
- Works alongside standard insulation for better energy efficiency.
- Available in multiple densities, boards, and roll formats for flexible installation in new builds or retrofits.

FAQ
How to install fireproof insulation?
Installation depends on the type of insulation. Slabs or boards should be cut to fit snugly between joists or studs, fixed with mechanical fasteners or adhesive, and sealed at joints using fireproof expanding foam or fire-rated mastic.
Follow manufacturer guidelines to get the best results, as installation can vary by product type and application. Always verify local fire safety requirements or consult a building inspector.
What is the best fireproof insulation?
Rockwool fireproof insulation is a top performer for most construction applications. The material is non-combustible and easy to handle, and it guarantees thermal and acoustic benefits.
Fireproof insulation boards are also excellent for wall systems and ceilings where rigidity and strength are a necessity.
What is fireproof insulation made of?
Typical materials used to make fire resistant insulation are stone or glass wool, fibreglass, ceramic fibres, and fire retardant foam formulations. Each fireproof insulation board is processed to resist ignition and maintain stability at high temperatures.
How to fireproof foam insulation?
Standard foam insulation is not entirely fireproof, but you can boost its fire resistance in several ways:
- Applying a fireproof coating.
- Enclosing it behind fire resistant panels.
- Applying fire rated expanding foam designed for safety-critical applications.
Always check that products are certified for fire resistance before use.
